Over 86% of dry eye patients have Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

If you’re suffering with dry eyes and have found no relief, you may have MGD

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a very common condition, but many don’t realize they have it. MGD is a condition where the glands in your eyelids don’t secrete enough oil into your tears. MGD progresses over time, and if not treated, can cause persistent irritated eyes that may burn, itch, feel dry, or have the sensation that there’s a grain of sand or dust in your eye, as well as blurry vision.

What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

MGD is a condition where the tiny glands in your eyelids don’t secrete enough oil into your tears. Your Meibomian Glands are responsible for producing the oily part of the tear film that is needed to protect the surface of your eye by preventing the evaporation of the watery part of your tears. When these glands become blocked are aren’t functioning well, your eyes are not getting enough oil in the tears, causing them to feel uncomfortable, irritated and dry.

Left untreated, MGD is a chronic and progressive disease.

What Causes MGD?

There are a number of conditions that contribute to MGD, including:

  • Prolonged computer/device use
  • Contact lens wear
  • Reading/watching TB
  • Eye surgery
  • Poor blinking
  • Environment/climate
  • Allergies
  • Eye infections (such as styes)
  • Glaucoma and chronic eye diseases
  • Medications
  • Makeup that can clog glandes

How is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) Diagnosed?

MGD can be diagnosed with a simple screening at our Dry Eye Specialty Center that includes a photograph of the eyes, called anterior segment imaging. MGD is a prevalent, chronic, and progressive disease that becomes worse the longer it goes untreated. Early detection and treatment can minimize long term negative impact to your eyes.

LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation may provide real, lasting relief from MGD.

How does LipiFlow® Work?

LipiFlow® is a painless, in office treatment that works by applying soothing heat and gentle pressure to clear the blocked glands that secrete the oil in order to restore normal function to your Meibomian glands.

A treatment for your eyelids, this comfortable and effective lid massage is done while resting in a chair in our Dry Eye Specialty Center.

You will receive an anesthetic eye drop so that you are completely comfortable during the treaetment.

Your eyelids and Meibomian Glands are gently heated and massaged to loosen the oil trapped within the glands. This automated treatment helps clear the gland obstruction and restore function.

There is no downtime or restrictions following your treatment.
