That’s why we perform comprehensive pre-operative examinations with advanced diagnostic testing, including iTrace. iTrace is an innovative testing device that performs five tests in one.

- Wavefront Aberrometry – measures how light travels through the eye
- Autorefraction – automatically determines the correct lens prescription for your eyes
- Keratometry – measures the curvature of the anterior of the cornea
- Pupillometer – measures pupil size, symmetry, reactivity
- Corneal Topography – creates 3-dimensional map of the surface of the cornea
It’s the only piece of ophthalmic equipment that can truly separate the visual function of a patient’s cornea from their internal optics. Using iTrace allows us to have a better understanding of how these structures affect a patient’s vision and use this additional information to make more precise decisions about treatment for optimal visual outcomes.
What is an iTrace Test?
iTrace testing is performed during your examination in our office with the iTrace imaging device. This breakthrough technology quickly provides detailed information about your vision that is not available through other tests performed during a typical eye exam.
Our staff will position you at the instrument and will quickly acquire the data. It is painless, non-invasive and does not require your eyes to be dilated. Your doctor uses this unique information about your eyes to better understand your unique vision to make more informed clinical decisions about your care.
How is iTrace different?
The iTrace uses “Star Wars” technology that was first developed for space and military applications. The iTrace measures the eye differently than any other test available and gives information to your doctor that no other tests can. Your iTrace exam can help your doctor better answer many questions you might have about your eyes, including:
- Am I a candidate for LASIK?
- Do I suffer from Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome?
- Am I a candidate for TORIC or Lifestyle Lenses?
- Is my astigmatism correctable?
- Why can’t I see well at night?
- Why am I having vision problems even after cataract surgery?
- Is there anything that can be done to improve my vision?
How will my doctor use the information from my iTrace exam?
The iTrace analysis can be used for solving many vision problems. For example, if you are interested in refractive surgery or LASIK, your doctor can determine if you are a good candidate. If you are in your 40s or 50s and not seeing as clearly as you did when you were younger, your doctor can know which vision component of your eye is causing the change. If you are having night vision difficulty, your doctor can analyze how your eyes see in light and dark conditions and possibly prescribe a different pair of glasses for nighttime. Most importantly, the iTrace gives your doctor information that has not been available through other tests, and this will allow us to customize your treatment options to give you the best possible vision.
If you have a cataract, your doctor will use the iTrace information to help select the best intra-ocular lens (IOL) for your eye and to plan surgery, including advanced the Lifestyle Lenses below that not only eliminate cataracts, but also provide you with increased freedom from glasses and contacts!
Is iTrace testing covered by my insurance?
As a new technology, it is likely that iTrace testing will not be covered by your insurance. Your doctor will inform you of the out-of-pocket cost if we believe the iTrace data is important to make the best decisions for your particular circumstance and unique vision needs.
